Metro Detroit outreach efforts

WMU staff from multiple colleges visit Cass Technical High School

On Wednesday, May 5, Western Michigan University held next step and interest level conversations with over 250 students at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI. The following staff members met with more than five classes, each ranging in grades nine through 12 to discuss the many opportunities that await them at Western:

  • Alvina Gipson, Admissions
  • Billy Clayton, Army ROTC
  • Scot Conant, CEAS
  • Rozlin Opolka, CFA
  • Scott VanAvery, HCOB

Our representatives were well received by both the staff and students at Cass Tech. In future years, college recruitment staff will be invited to meet with juniors and seniors in the fall, in addition to outreach conducted year-round by Admissions staff.

Seeking volunteers for July 12

The WMU Office of Admissions has been a proud, long-time supporter of the Metro Detroit Youth Day program, and we are looking for volunteers from the academic colleges to join us at the upcoming Metro Detroit Youth Day at Belle Isle on Wednesday, July 12. We need volunteers to bring interactive projects to engage children ranging in age from six to 16. You can learn more about the program at miyouthfdn.org/events. Please contact Alvina Gipson with questions or to confirm interest in the event.
