WMU professor publishes book examining religious expression in U.S. public schools
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Dr. Brett Geier, professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Research and Technology at Western Michigan University, has published a new book titled “The Changing Landscape of Religious Expression in U.S. Public Schools.” The book examines the evolving relationship between religion and public education through the lens of the 2022 Supreme Court case Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, in which a high school football coach’s postgame prayers sparked national attention and a landmark ruling.
Across 11 chapters, Geier explores the historical, legal and cultural contexts that shape how religion is expressed and interpreted in U.S. schools today. Drawing on his professional experience as both a public school administrator and legal scholar, he provides readers with a balanced analysis of the decision’s implications for educators, administrators and policymakers.
As a faculty member in Western’s K-12 educational leadership program, Geier brings his research directly into the classroom. His ongoing scholarship helps prepare current and future school leaders to navigate complex legal and ethical issues in education. Students benefit from engaging with contemporary, real-world topics and from learning with a professor who is actively shaping national conversations on educational law and leadership.
“Our students are the next generation of school leaders,” Geier says. “Understanding the legal and social dimensions of religion in schools helps them make informed, thoughtful decisions that serve all members of their communities.”
Where to find the book: “The Changing Landscape of Religious Expression in U.S. Public Schools” is now available through Rowman & Littlefield and major book retailers.
