Meet Annabel: Physical and health education teacher education

WMU Dance Team member

I chose PHETE because I have a strong passion for movement and teaching. I want to teach children to love fitness and inspire them to be lifelong movers.

The faculty in the PHETE program have been incredible. They genuinely care about you beyond the classroom and take the time to get to know you. They are motivational, and excellent examples of who I aspire to be as an educator one day.

I want to teach P.E. to elementary students and coach a dance team at either a high school or collegiate level. I am also majoring in dance, so I plan to implement that degree into teaching dance as well!

WMU is an excellent choice for students who want to have endless opportunities to do it all. At WMU I have two different majors and can be part of athletics, which is a rare opportunity. There is such a strong knit community here at Western, and I feel I have made connections that will last my whole career!

Being a part of the dance team is one of the most special experiences. I get to work with an amazing group of girls and represent my university at almost all athletic events. We dance in volleyball, football, men's, and women's basketball, and more.

My favorite part of the dance team is attending nationals in April. I love being able to compete against other universities and show all the hard work we have put in all season. It is the most rewarding experience.

I will apply so many elements of my experience on the dance team to my career. I want to coach a dance team, and I have learned so much from being one in college. The dance team has also taught me so much about hard-work, time management, and discipline that will be beneficial as I head into my career.

Physical and health education teacher education at WMU

Our nation and state’s growing focus on the broader notion of wellness has strengthened the preference for careers teaching physical and health education to students. The Michigan State Board of Education has approved new teacher preparation standards for physical and health education. Western Michigan University is the first institution in the state to offer this mandated combined endorsement with dual certification in physical education and health education to teach students in kindergarten through grade 12.
