Elaine: Elementary Education

WMU Student

Hi! My name is Elaine Teed, a Junior, studying Elementary Education. I am a CEHD Student Ambassador, a member of Aspiring Educators of Michigan (AEM) and Blankets for Bronson.  AEM is a future teachers origination where we get advice from professionals in the field of education, discuss teaching strategies, and host a "So You Want to Be a Teacher Conference" at the end of each year. Blankets for Bronson is where we make cards and tie blankets, then send them out to kids in local hospitals.

At first, I applied to WMU looking to pursue a career in business, but I found that teaching was my true passion. I felt that being in schools and working with students firsthand, I could make a difference in their lives. I was blessed to have amazing teachers in my K-12 schooling so I want to inspire the next generation. WMU truly stood out to me because as a future teacher I was able to get experience observing a classroom my first semester on campus. WMU also had the resources for me to succeed in the classroom with one of my favorite spaces, the McGinnis Reading Center. Providing books and teaching materials that I would us in my future classroom.

My favorite class I have taken so far is Teaching as a Profession with Dr. Brett Geier. We went over what teaching looks like beyond your everyday curriculum. Expanding on ideas like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, IDEA 2004, 504 Plans, teaching contracts, and supporting English Language Learners in the classroom.

I love waking up early and going to the Student Center Dining and getting the chocolate chip pancakes.

In 2025 I was able to attend the Hockey National Championship in St. Louis where I cheered on the Broncos to an amazing win!

After class I enjoy going to the Rec Center and going to an F45 or Cycling class with friends!

I love playing in the many intermural sports WMU has. Volleyball and soccer are my favorite. They are easy to join and a great way to stay active!

Working on campus has been a great way to get involved with the university and be able to connect with faculty and staff. WMU is extremely accommodating making sure that academics come first.
