WMU Honors Open House today

The first major Office of Admissions event of the season is today! Along with many campus partners, we are hosting an Honors Open House in the new student center. Throughout the day, you may see prospective students and their families in various spaces around campus. As you encounter our student guests, be sure to welcome them, and should they need assistance, please offer directions to help them find the locations they seek. It takes a campus to recruit a student, and your efforts are appreciated!

Semi-annual re-authorization began this week

The semi-annual security re-authorization process began Monday, Oct. 2, and concludes Friday, Oct. 13. Supervisors will have through Friday, Oct. 20, to approve or deny requests.

Security re-authorization allows the Registrar's Office to audit access to critical computer systems used at WMU and to ensure that users are familiar with the latest policies. Please direct questions to the Registrar's Office at (269) 387-4300.

Reporting a student concern

There may be times when faculty or staff find themselves concerned about a student’s welfare or observe uncharacteristic behavioral changes. The most effective way to get help for students is to submit a concern using the online form. To begin, log in to goWMU and follow the steps below:

  1. Select "Student Concern Form" from the alphabetized list in the Resources for instructors and staff column.
  2. Read the bulleted list of reasons why one would submit the Student Affairs Concern Form. Assuming your concern is not included in those bullets, scroll down to the Academic and Holistic Wellbeing Concern Form to see a list of each CRN (UG courses only) for which you are the primary instructor of record. We are working on a fix to also add secondary instructors. Select the CRN of the section of the student of concern. Note: If you are not the primary instructor of any courses this semester, you will not see the Academic and Holistic Wellbeing Concern Form option.
  3. The class roster for that CRN will open. Select the student of concern. For large classes, use the “Search this list” function to find a student.
  4. Select one or more of the six boxes to indicate the nature of your concerns. Optionally, enter any comments for the student in the “Comments for Student” textbox and any comments for our student success staff that will be doing the outreach to the student in the “Comments for Staff” textbox.
  5. Click the "Submit Concern" button toward the bottom of the page to complete the process.

Please direct questions regarding student concern forms to Katie EasleyLearn more about the Navigator Network.

Free shredding event on Oct. 13

To encourage proper disposal of the University’s protected information, the GLBA Committee is hosting a free document and media shredding event on Friday, Oct. 13, from 9 to 11 a.m. near Sangren Hall (Lot 41).

Fall midterm grades due Oct. 16

Grades can be entered in goWMU using the Midterm Grade Worksheet. Grades can also be reported through D2L. Additional information on grading, as well as instructions on how to submit midterm grades via Elearning, can be found at wmich.edu/registrar/faculty-staff/grades.

Work-study cancellations begin Oct. 27

Fall federal work-study recipients must have earnings charged to their fall work-study offers by Friday, Oct. 27, or those offers will be canceled. If a student has been hired, but will not be paid through work-study until after this date, the student or the employer must notify the financial aid office by emailing Student Financial Aid before the Oct. 27 deadline. Emails received after Oct. 27 may not be considered and once an offer has been canceled, it may not be reinstated.

WMU is participating in MCAN's Michigan College Month

The Office of Admissions is waiving the application fee for domestic first-year and transfer students when they submit their WMU admission application by Oct. 31, 2023, as a part of Michigan College Month. Students can get started at wmich.edu/apply.

First-year students

When a first-year student submits their WMU admission application† during the month of October, they will be fully considered for all WMU academic programs* and scholarships, as well as priority consideration for the Lee Honors College.

†A complete first-year admission application file includes application (Common App including WMU supplement), official high school transcripts and $40 application fee or fee waiver. Students who wish for an ACT/SAT score to be considered in review must self-report their score on the admission app.

*While recommendation letters, essays and other supplemental materials are optional, first-year students who wish to be considered for Aviation Flight Science or direct admission to the Bronson School of Nursing should submit these documents and must complete an admission application by the Early Action deadline, Dec. 15, 2023. Both programs are fall entry only. View additional information at wmich.edu/apply/competitive.

Transfer students

We recommend transfer students (those enrolled at another institution post-high school) submit their WMU application and required documents six to eight months† before they intend to transfer to WMU. This allows the student to meet with an advisor and register for courses in the same timeframe as current WMU students.

†Transfer students who are interested in Aviation Flight Science must complete their admission application by Feb. 15. While recommendation letters, essays and other supplemental materials are optional, students who wish to be considered for Aviation Flight Science should submit these documents. The program is fall entry only. View additional information at wmich.edu/apply/competitive.

Did you know? A fun fact from the Registrar...

Ann Stockwell, auditor in the Registrar's Office, retired last week after nearly 11 years of service. Ann's keen sense of humor, fluency in multiple languages and passion for completing jigsaw puzzles in the break room brought a special energy and camaraderie to our office. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of helping countless students graduate, and we are truly grateful for our time with her. Congratulazioni, Ann, e grazie. Sarai missed!
