College of Education and Human Development instructors earn university awards for first-year experience course
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Derek Andree and Abby Voss from the College of Education and Human Development were recently honored by Western Michigan University for their outstanding instruction and commitment to student success while teaching FYE-2100, First-Year Experience (FYE) this fall. Andree, acting director of admissions and advising, and Voss, special education student, received the Instructor of the Year Award and Co-facilitator of the Year Award, respectively.
Given out annually by WMU's Office of Student Transitions, through a nomination process, the awards recognize outstanding work for both instructors and student leaders of FYE.
According to Andree's nominators, he is incredibly friendly, approachable, and fun to be around, creating a classroom where students feel welcomed and included from day one. He keeps the class organized and engaging, using activities that help students connect with each other while staying on track academically. They also highlighted his genuine care for his students and his commitment to ensuring every individual feels seen and supported.
Voss' nominators said she is caring, helpful, and always available when students need support. She creates a safe, fun classroom where everyone feels included, and she brings the perfect mix of friendliness and professionalism. Students praised her ability to relate to them personally while maintaining professionalism, using interactive games and real conversations to keep the course material engaging.
About First-Year Experience at WMU
FYE-2100 is an intensive, highly interactive two-credit hour course that introduces students to the excitement of intellectual inquiry, personal discovery, and the university campus culture as they make the transition from high school to college. Facilitated by both an instructor and a student leader, it is designed to unite a new community of WMU students through shared experiences that support holistic wellness.
