Dagny: Fashion Design and Development

WMU Student

Hi! I’m Dagny, a freshman studying Fashion Design and Development and Environmental Sustainability Studies. On Campus, I am a designer in MODA (Merchandising Opportunities and Design Association), a member of the Western Track and Field Club, and a student ambassador.

I struggled with knowing what path I wanted to take. I have a love for so many subjects. I realized though that Fashion Design combined those passions. I love reading and analyzing characters. Fashion is a way to illustrate characters. I love working my way through problems, which there is a lot of in sewing. I love history, which is extra interesting when explored through a fashion lens. In general, I love the way that clothing represents who we are. I wanted to study that.

My favorite thing about the Fashion Design and Development program is the Professors. Prior to university, I had very little sewing experience, but thanks to my Professors, I’m not afraid to ask for help. If there’s a problem, we are able to come up with a solution together. Outside of my construction classes, my Professors make classes so interesting that I’m always excited to walk to class. I’ve found that they are very understanding, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them!

It was incredibly exciting to have a line in the fashion show. To play a role in something so grand is an amazing feeling, especially when you dedicate so much time to it. The show is a way for me to explore fashion design in an independent way. I had to problem-solve and plan by myself. At times, it was daunting. In the end, it is so rewarding to see your art displayed. At the time I am writing this, the show is seven days away. I am ecstatic thinking about bowing at the end of my line.

If you’re into vintage fashion/thrift stores, then the K-zoo fashion scene will fit you perfectly (terrible fashion pun). For example, Vintage in the Zoo is a vintage market that hosts several sellers. Within my first couple weeks at WMU, I ended up finding this amazing cable-knit sweater that has become a staple of my wardrobe.

Fashion Design and Development at WMU

Design and development professionals use their creative and technical skills to design products, develop patterns, monitor quality control and assurance and coordinate sourcing activities in apparel and soft goods companies. The major meets increasing industry demand for graduates who understand the industry's design and merchandising aspects. The design and merchandising functions are becoming more interrelated as apparel firms rely increasingly on private brands; and apparel manufacturers assume a more prominent retailing role. Students who elect this option take design, merchandising, and business courses to prepare them for challenging careers in apparel manufacturing, marketing, and retailing companies.
