Pursue a B.S. in mathematics

The Bachelor of Science in mathematics gives you a broad and rigorous foundation in mathematical theory, proof and problem-solving. You will learn how mathematical ideas are constructed, how to test the logic behind an argument and how to explain complex concepts clearly. As WMU's most flexible mathematics major, the program gives you room to select electives that connect with interests in the natural or social sciences and can also complement preparation for law school. Advanced coursework strengthens the habits of mind needed to approach unfamiliar questions with patience and precision.

At Western Michigan University, you will learn from internationally recognized faculty who are committed to your success and accessible inside and outside the classroom. You will also become part of a supportive community that encourages academic achievement and professional growth. Through Western Essential Studies and an optional accelerated master’s program, you will graduate ready for advanced study or for careers that value careful analysis, sound reasoning and the ability to work with complex information.

What you'll learn

As a mathematics major, you will experience mathematics in fun and powerful ways while developing precise language, careful reasoning and effective problem-solving skills. Through subjects such as advanced calculus and numerical analysis, you will explore the ideas behind mathematical methods and gain a deeper understanding of why they work. You will learn to use quantitative evidence and logical reasoning to construct arguments, write proofs and communicate abstract ideas clearly. These ways of thinking can also deepen your understanding of topics in a minor or second major.

There are several accelerated master's degrees.

You can choose from three mathematics majors: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Math Teaching and Learning. The Mathematics major places greater emphasis on abstract reasoning. The Applied Mathematics major places greater emphasis on mathematical skills for applications across other disciplines. The Math Teaching and Learning major is designed for students planning to teach high school mathematics and, when combined with the Master of Arts in Teaching program, prepares students for teacher certification.

Mathematics can connect with many fields, allowing you to apply quantitative reasoning to the subjects and problems that interest you. If you are interested in the sciences, consider programs in geological and environmental sciences, physics, chemistry, biology or environment, geography and sustainability. You can also connect mathematics with design and technology through mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering and other engineering programs. Other complementary areas include economics and philosophy, as well as data-focused programs such as data science and statistics, computer science and accounting.
