Graduate Internship Program
Statement of purpose
University Libraries occasionally offers paid graduate internships to students currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS/MSI graduate program. These internships are designed to be mutually beneficial learning opportunities in which the intern gains valuable academic library experience and University Libraries benefits from the knowledge and unique perspectives of the interns. Each internship is designed to complete a specific project or set of well-defined activities that advance the mission of the library.
University Libraries is committed to the University’s strategic direction on inclusive excellence and equity and actively works to promote a diverse and accessible University culture. WMU Libraries strongly encourages applications from candidates in underrepresented groups, multilingual candidates, and those with a passion for inclusion, accessibility, disability advocacy, and related themes.
Recruiting and hiring process
Internships may be offered across all library areas: collection management, digitization, instruction, archives, user services, emerging technology, and engagement programming. Open internship positions will be posted on the University Libraries website and shared with regional library schools.
Orientation and training
University Libraries provides a robust orientation and training program that not only introduces the intern to a specialty area with our large academic library system but also exposes them to the full array of operations in all library departments. Supervisors will make every effort to help the intern make meaningful connections between their library work and their MLIS/MLS/MSI course studies.
Supervisors will actively work with interns to find opportunities to participate in campus or online workshops, webinars, professional development activities, and research projects.
Final project portfolio
All interns will be encouraged to document their accomplishments throughout their time with University Libraries, including collecting tangible work products and evidence of meaningful library experience. Supervisors will work with the intern to describe their experience on a CV and in any paperwork required for their MLIS/MLS/MSI program. Our goal is for our interns to be well prepared to move to the next level in their careers.
