University Libraries awards two scholarships to student employees
The University Libraries awarded two scholarships to student employees for their outstanding contributions. Julio Garcia Hernandez and Sung Ham have been selected to receive $1,000 scholarships to support their academic pursuits at Western.
Julio Garcia Hernandez
Julio Garcia Hernandez is pursuing a bachelor’s in Japanese and works at Waldo Library’s service desk. The scholarship will help Hernandez during his study abroad in Japan this fall.
Learning how to access research is one of the best skills Hernandez has learned on the job—and it will be helpful in his future career as a translator, too.
“During the translation process, there will always be something the translator isn’t entirely familiar with,” Hernandez says.
Understanding how to navigate and find resources is a critical skill when working on time-sensitive projects with publishers, he adds.
Sung Ham
Sung Ham is an aviation flight science major and works at Waldo Library’s service desk. Ham’s experience at the Libraries has helped prepare him for whatever comes next.
“I’ve learned the value of integrity more than anything. Staying honest, dependable and consistent has shaped the way I work and interact with others,” Ham says.
Ham shared that winning the scholarship has been “a reminder that good things will come when you do your best.”
“I’m truly grateful for the support—it motivates me to continue giving my best in everything I do.”
