Alex Teal joined the Western Michigan University Libraries in January 2020 as the Emerging Technology Specialist. Alex coordinates programming and technology for the virtual reality lab, multimedia editing studio, learning glass studio, and other emerging technology initiatives. Alex earned his Masters of Business Administration from Spring Arbor University and joined us with over nine years’ experience in media services at Kalamazoo College.

What is your role at WMU Libraries?
I am the Emerging Technology Specialist. I’ve also been working with WMUx as an Instructional Designer since April.
What’s been the highlight of your first year at WMU?
It’s been a memorable first year! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my student staff. They’re a talented and intelligent group.
What are the most critical challenges facing libraries right now?
The University Libraries has continually marketed itself as a gathering space and hub for all of campus. How do we maintain that space in the minds of our community when we can’t gather?
Have you found a favorite spot on campus? If so, where?
I’ve not been around enough to find it yet. I look forward to exploring the campus more.
What do you do for fun?
I enjoy board games and all kinds of trivia. I’m a part-time quizmaster!
