New Equipment Library offers items to borrow, not buy

Western Michigan University students, faculty and staff can now borrow non-traditional items, including electronics and household items, from Waldo Library. The new Equipment Library features a collection of useful and fun items that patrons can check out for free instead of having to buy them.

Students can checkout 4K cameras, sewing machines, laptops and other equipment from Waldo Library for free.

“Our Equipment Library bridges the gap for our students and provides access to the tools of learning outside of the classroom,” explains Paul Gallagher, associate dean for resources and digital strategies.

“While our offerings have curricular ties, we've tried to provide a diverse enough assortment to serve everyone, no matter the major or if their need is for a course, or just for fun!”

Since starting the Equipment Library in August 2023, more than 900 items have been checked out.

“Laptops have been our most heavily requested item, but in short supply,” adds Brandon Meissner, User Services coordinator. Nine more laptops were recently added to the Equipment Library to better meet this need.

“Tangibly, it provides a great new resource for the campus and provides a way to play with some new technology and experiment a bit,” says Gallagher. “Beyond the practical, the University Libraries are focused on student success and helping to expand opportunities beyond the classroom.”

Members of the Western community can stop by the service desk on the first floor of Waldo Library with a Bronco Card to check out items from the Equipment Library.
