WMU’s Global and International Studies program names new director
A longtime Western Michigan University economics professor has been tapped to head the global and international studies program, according to an announcement from Dr. Carla Koretsky, College of Arts and Sciences dean.
Dr. Susan Pozo, professor of economics and allied faculty member of the global and international studies program, will take over as director effective July 1. She replaces Dr. Laura Hastings, who has served in that capacity since 2014.
In her new role, Pozo will lead the program’s more than 50 allied faculty members as they work to promote globalization among the University’s academic disciplines.
“I am delighted that Dr. Pozo has agreed to serve as director of global and international studies,” Koretsky said. “Her international expertise and commitment to making Western a more globally engaged environment make her an ideal candidate to lead the program.”
DR. SUSAN POZO
Pozo, who earned a doctoral degree in economics from Michigan State University, joined the WMU faculty in 1982. She began her tenure as assistant professor of economics, quickly rose to the rank of associate professor and was promoted again to professor in 1994.
Her areas of expertise include the determinants and economic impacts of workers’ remittances, immigration policy, undocumented migration, returns to international human capital, empirical distribution of foreign exchange rates, measures of exchange risk, and underground financial and economic activity.
Additionally, Pozo, who spent much of her childhood in Venezuela, has been a visiting fellow at Harris Manchester College in Oxford, U.K., a visiting researcher at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain, and a Fulbright research scholar at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay.
THE GLOBAL AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM
The global and international studies program in the College of Arts and Sciences at WMU offers a broad, integrative approach to the study of global and international issues, supported by the methods and theories of several disciplines, language study and regional case studies.
The program prepares students for careers in the increasingly globalized marketplace and to be informed, engaged global citizens. A global and international studies degree from WMU may include a study abroad experience, international internship, or other related opportunities that help students develop the knowledge, skills and perspectives pivotal to pursuing work in international vocations.
