KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Finding an item in a large academic library can be challenging, but a new wayfinding tool from University Libraries is making it easier for patrons and staff to navigate library spaces and locate physical materials.

LibMaps, an interactive mapping and wayfinding platform developed by Springshare, integrates with the Libraries’ online catalog. When users search for a physical item in Library Search, they can click the “Locate it” button to see exactly where the item is shelved. The tool highlights the item’s location in red on an interactive floor map, guiding users directly to the correct shelf. If an item is not publicly accessible, users are directed to the appropriate service desk for assistance.

Interactive maps make it easier to navigate the library and guide users directly to the materials and spaces they need.

"With the new maps integration, users are able to find what they're looking for on the shelf, right within the Library Search results,” said Emily Strong, integrated library systems specialist. “Our library space is large, and this should help make navigating a little easier—so users know exactly where to go before they even arrive at the stacks.”

The updated interactive maps also allow users to explore library spaces more intuitively. Through the Places and Collections finder tabs, users can select locations or collections and immediately see them highlighted on the map. Step-by-step directions help guide patrons to stack locations and other key areas throughout Waldo Library and the Zhang Legacy Collections Center.

“Waldo Library alone has over 300 rows of shelving. It can be a maze for those unfamiliar with the library,” says Faith Fetty, user services manager and stacks management lead at Waldo Library. “We know it can be difficult to locate a single book in our vast collection, and the new generation of students desires the ability to locate their materials independently. This tool makes it easy.”

In addition, the maps now support shareable links and directions that patrons can use for easy reference while navigating library spaces. Library staff can use the same feature to send customized guidance to patrons, improving reference support and follow-up communication.

Together, these enhancements elevate the user experience, supporting independent discovery and making library spaces more accessible and easier to navigate.
