Western Michigan University has been approved as a participating member of the Digital Scriptorium, a consortium of American libraries and museums that provide free online access to collections of pre-modern manuscripts. Becoming a participating member of the digital scriptorium increases the reach and discoverability of the unique digital images and assets that are generated by the WMU Libraries.

“This membership aligns with WMU Libraries' commitment to providing access to all kinds of information when and where researchers can find it,” said Dr. Sue Steuer, special collections librarian.

To prepare the Libraries’ collection for inclusion in the Digital Scriptorium’s website, library metadata specialists and librarians collaborated with the Medieval Institute to accurately describe medieval and pre-modern materials. These materials were digitized by library specialists with expertise in photographing and scanning delicate pieces.
