Integrated research instruction for your course
Western Michigan University librarians partner with faculty and instructors across disciplines to help students find, evaluate and use information in ways that support course learning goals and prepare students for academic, professional and civic success.
Through course-integrated library instruction, we help students develop information literacy (ACRL, 2012) and critical thinking (NACE, 2024) skills by learning to:
- Explore topics and develop research questions.
- Gather and analyze information from diverse sources.
- Apply effective, inclusive reasoning to evaluate credibility.
- Synthesize and accurately interpret information and data.
- Anticipate information needs and plan research strategies.
- Communicate findings and decision-making processes with clarity and transparency.
- Critically assess and responsibly use AI-supported and other emerging research tools.
- Understand ethical and legal responsibilities related to information use.
Resources for your students
Student consultations
Our librarians offer one-on-one consultations for students at all academic levels, from first-year writing assignments to theses and dissertations. These sessions focus on individual research needs, like refining topics, conducting searches and evaluating sources. For course-wide support, schedule a library instruction session.
Subject and course guides
WMU librarians create subject and course guides to support student research projects and coursework. Each guide features resources in alignment with course curricula and assignments. Guides are linked from the Library Resources tab in your Elearning courses.
