Information Literacy Instruction


In order to support WMU’s vision to be learner centered, discovery driven, and globally engaged, the University Libraries’ Information Literacy program seeks to foster information literacy for all students, faculty, and staff.

What is information literacy?

Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing:

  • effective and reflective discovery of information
  • the understanding of how information is produced and valued
  • the use of information in creating new knowledge
  • participating ethically in communities of learning


  1. Integrate information literacy into overall university curricula through scaffolding of information literacy across courses within departments; pedagogical support of faculty; and development and promotion of asynchronous online instruction materials.
  2. Target information literacy interventions for:
    • General Education courses
    • Baccalaureate Writing courses
    • Major/Minor required courses
    • Graduate and research-intensive courses
  3. Integrate information literacy into the forthcoming General Education program
  4. Assess the impact of the Libraries’ information literacy program
  5. Increase visibility and outreach of Libraries’ information literacy program and services for students, faculty, and staff
