Meet Alex: Exercise Science

"I really want to spread more knowledge about exercise and fitness because I feel it's really important for everyone."

Exercise science at WMU

This program is a scientifically-based curriculum which includes coursework in the basic sciences, the physiology and biomechanics of exercise, fitness assessment and exercise testing, exercise prescription and training, behavior modification and the clinical aspects of exercise. We offer three exercise science concentrations.

  • Why exercise science?

Growing up, I got into fitness later into my high school years, and I love exercising. And I found out that you can go to school for this so that's why I joined the program.

  • Why WMU?

There was a lot of major different factors. One of them was college assistance migrant program (CAMP), which is a program that helps with room and board. And I also got accepted into the MLK program, which offers another scholarship for tuition. Also Western is only about an hour away from home, so it's not a long distance away.

  • What is CAMP and how are you involved?

What they do is they go to different high schools, specifically southwestern Michigan high schools, looking for students who are in financial need and have parents that are migrants or migrant workers, and they just assist you throughout your years at college. This is through room and board to tuition and also having people there to support you.

  • What is the MLK Academy program?

It is similar to the CAMP. You have to get accepted into the program and after that you receive their scholarship for tuition. They also offer weekly meetings with mentors who can help you whenever you need it.

  • What would you like to do after you graduate?

After I graduate with an exercise science degree, I hope to find a job that has to do with exercise science. Specifically working with people and showing them like why exercise is important and making them fall in love with fitness. And I really want to spread more knowledge about exercise and fitness because I feel like it's really important and something that's not like at the top of people's minds nowadays.

I also hope to be a physical therapist one day. I love physical therapy because growing up I did break my bones a few times and I had to go to physical therapy for that and I loved the environment there.
