The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) houses undergraduate majors in business education, child and family development, family and consumer sciences teacher education, family studies, fashion design and development, fashion merchandising, industrial technology education, interior design, nutrition and dietetics, occupational education studies, workforce education and development, and youth and community development, as well as a variety of graduate programs. As a FCS major, your professor offices are located nearby, providing quick and easy access near your classrooms and labs. WMU professors are required to hold office hours outside of class time each week, and they enjoy getting to know and help their students.

Fashion Apparel Lab

The apparel and sewing lab for the fashion merchandising and design program provides state-of-the-art apparel construction technology for student use. With 22 apparel construction stations featuring industry-standard sewing machines, students are guaranteed both small class sizes and hands-on experience to prepare for their future careers.

Interior Design Resource Room

The interior design resource room provides students with access to many different types of textiles and materials to use for projects and design boards. All of these items are donated by different companies, which provides a great network of business connections for our students during their internships and after graduation.

Food Lab

The food lab serves students in both the nutrition and dietetics and food service operations and sustainability programs. Complete with a food preparation demonstration area, seating area and six individual cooking stations, students gain hands-on experience in food preparation environments and practices.

Family Science Classroom

The family science classroom offers a versatile learning environment for students majoring in child and family development, family studies, and youth and community development. The unique tables can be arranged in rows, circles or small groups to promote communication and engagement in these people-oriented programs.

Computer Lab

The College of Education and Human Development houses computer labs in each of its academic buildings for students to use for work and printing. The Kohrman Hall computer lab is equipped with specialty printing technology reserved for use by design students. The plotter printer allows students to print high-quality and large-scale design projects in sizes not available elsewhere on campus.

The interior design program houses four design studios for students to utilize in each year of the program. The studios allow students space to work on various design methods throughout the program, store design materials, showcase their work and collaborate with other students. Due to the fixed number of drafting tables, the program maintains small class sizes throughout the interior design courses.
