Position Summary:

As Education Assistant you would assist the Lead Educator in summer camps and programming. We are looking for an engaging and positive person who is interested in learning a wide range of skills related to education and youth leadership. The Education Assistant should be an energetic, dependable individual who likes working with children and adults and inspiring others to learn about science.

Status:

Hourly/Non-Exempt: Seasonal (May or June through August 2023; this is a temporary/seasonal, part time position that ends by 08/31/2023

Measurables:

Safe, inspiring educational programs, summer camps and educational experiences for our guests at the Air Zoo

Program Delivery:
  • Assist the Lead Instructor with daily camp activities, including setting up and cleaning up materials, leading small group activities, assisting campers when extra support is needed, and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all campers
  • Support an organized welcoming arrival and pick up for campers, provide aftercare supervision as assigned
  • Supervise campers during lunch and breaks, ensuring that all safety protocols are followed and all campers are accounted for
  • Assist with additional summer programming including community programs as scheduled, including evenings and weekends
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for programming, including preparing materials and equipment
  • Communicate questions or concerns to Lead Educator
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and clean environment throughout the camp program
  • Invest in the success of the Air Zoo by being fearlessly innovative and pitching new creative ideas and concepts.

Team Support:
  • Work in a supportive team environment with other educators to deliver safe, fun, and inspiring camps to students in grades K-8.
  • Camp preparation, set up, clean up • During camp, work as a team to support campers in their learning and having fun!
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High school students and college students are welcome to apply
  • Experience working with children in any setting preferred
  • Creative, motivated, and enthusiastic
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and punctual; able to multi-task and manage time effectively
  • Use emails or text for communications with Air Zoo Manager
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, or climb stairs, and lift objects up to and exceeding 20 pounds
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, as well as a safe learning environment
  • Ability to think strategically and operate effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Passion for learning about the Air Zoo and telling our story to a wide audience

SCHEDULE:

Part Time-Days: up to 20-34 hours per week May or June through August 2023; Scheduled hours typically between 7:00am and 6:00pm. Schedule and exact hours depends on camp programming and scheduled educational programs. This position is in-office/on-site at the Air Zoo in Portage, Michigan.

HEALTH REQUIREMENT & PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS:

Because the Air Zoo is a public-facing organization, we encourage employees to be fully vaccinated again COVID-19 as defined by the CDC, but it is not a requirement for employment. The Air Zoo follows CDC and Kalamazoo Health Department’s guidelines for COVID testing, isolation, mask wearing, and may require masks to be Guest Experience Ambassador (GEM) worn by employees in certain settings to improve safety. Pre-employment drug screening and state & federal background checks are required for all Air Zoo employees.

COMPENSATION:

$12-$14 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
