Description: The Aviation Mental Health Symposium was hosted by Western Michigan University at the College of Aviation in Battle Creek, Michigan, October 7-10, 2024. We welcomed in many different aviation professionals and institutions to dive further into the crucial topic of mental health and wellness in aviation.

Keynote

The keynote event, Training The Durable Mindset: 10 Keys to Elevating Mental Performance by Dr. Dillon L. Small. Dr. Small is the Director of Sport Performance Psychology for Air Force Academy Athletics, and a licensed clinical psychologist. Prior to this role, Dr. Small served as the Chief of Psychological Health for the Air Force Academy Cadet Wing, where he maintained programmatic oversight for a team of embedded mental performance experts that work directly with Cadets to ensure high-performance in academics, athletics, and leadership.

Navigating the Aviation Medical Process

Panelists: Dr. Penny Giovanetti, Daniel Danczyk

Moderated by: Dr. Elizabeth Bjerke

Over the past few years, the FAA has been working on changes to the aviation medical certification process. In January of 2024 an Aviation Rulemaking Committee - Mental Health & Aviation Medical Clearances was established to provide further recommendations on the process. Join Drs. Giovanetti and Dancyzk from the FAA to learn about the progress being made and changes implemented at the FAA level.

Other key topics will include the development of programs for mental health support, and effective organizational policies that promote mental health.

The discussion will focus on the unique stressors faced by aviation students, such as academic pressures, flight training demands, and concerns about maintaining medical certification. Experts will share insights on proactive mental health strategies, coping mechanisms for anxiety and burnout, and the importance of early intervention. The session will also address the role of mental health in long-term career success and how students can balance their well-being with the rigorous demands of their training programs.

Elevating Voices

Dr. Johnson's presentation will be followed by a panel of experts who will answer questions and discuss the challenges faced, and the best way to support marginalized students in aviation.
