Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport - Management Internship Program
WELCOME - The Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport has established an Airport Management Internship Program, which allows students to align educational knowledge with real world experiences in the aviation industry. The Airport Management Internship is sponsored by the Aeronautics Board of Trustees.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW - The internship program is a semester-based program designed to give students access to many different areas within the airports organizational structure. The goal is to allow students the opportunity to help identify what he or she would like to specialize in post-graduation. Though the intern can expect to interact with various areas of the airport, they will report to the Assistant Director for Finance & Administration. The intern will learn the needs of an airport in the day-to-day operations dealing with tenants, passengers, and other airport administration. Additionally, the intern will be expected to accurately complete assigned projects and tasks in regard to aviation management. A complete overview of the specific subject areas that will be addressed during the course of the internship will be addressed later in this document. The internship position is also aimed at teaching other skills such as good work ethic, a positive attitude, effective communication, and problem solving. These skills are equally important as understanding the daily administration and operations of the airport.
PAY - This is a paid internship with an anticipated start pay commensurate with State of Michigan minimum wage, paid on a bi-weekly basis.
SCHEDULE - The program will take place on a semester basis (fall, winter, summer). Interns will work 16-20 hours per week during weekday hours, based on availability. Hours may be temporarily altered based on special events, weather, or other factors.
VACATION/SICK TIME - Interns are temporary employees, and therefore not eligible for paid leave time. In the event that an intern is unable to report to work, notification must be made to their supervisor as soon as possible.
PROGRAM OUTLINE - The intern position was created in order to expose students to the many facets of what a career in the aviation industry consists of. The selected intern can expect to be exposed to the following subject areas during the duration of the internship program. Additionally, there are areas within the airport that are not listed that the intern may exposed to throughout their time at AZO. If the intern expresses a particular interest that he or she would like to experience, the airport will do its best efforts to allow them the opportunity to do so. Interns are required to keep notes of their experiences and activities. At the end of their internship, they will use the log to complete a final report.
INTRODUCTION
- AIRPORT BADGE ISSUE & SIDA TRAINING - The intern will compete SIDA badge training and be issued their Airport ID.
- ESTABLISH INTERNSHIP GOALS - Establishment of goals for the duration of the internship to include career goals, areas of interest to be addressed, priority subject areas, resume critique, etc.
- INTRODUCTION TO AIRPORT STAFF - The intern will have the opportunity to meet airport staff at AZO.
- AIRPORT TOUR/OVERVIEW - Introduction to all areas and departments of the airport, to include a brief description of the role each area and department plays.
- INITIAL ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATIONS TRAINING - The intern will complete an administration introduction, including an overview of the office, office equipment, and human resources items. Introductory to key documents such as airport mission/vision statements, organizational chart, rules & regulations, ALP, etc.
ADMINISTRATION – (2-3 Weeks)
- MEETINGS - Attend and participate in meetings as appropriate, such as the Aeronautics Board, tenant meetings, operations, etc.
- PROPERTIES - Assist with property-related projects and assist with information gathering and dissemination.
- FINANCE - Assist with information gathering and dissemination in relation to budget, rates & charges, and special projects.
- SPECIAL PROJECTS - Participate in ad hoc projects as they occur.
- CUSTOMER SERVICE - Assisting in person in the terminal and in office. Will take action as appropriate, seeking out assistance as appropriate.
- EMAIL & PHONE ETIQUETTE - Exposure to a wide range of phone calls and email requests related to customer issues, tenant issues, questions in regards to the airport, etc. Assists and directs calls as appropriate.
AIRFIELD OPERATIONS (3-4 Weeks)
- FAR PART 139 - The intern will become familiar with Part 139 and how it applies to the airport.
- AIRPORT SAFETY SELF-INSPECTION PROGRAM - Will become familiar with how to properly conduct an Airport Safety Self Inspection.
- PART 77 SURFACES - The intern will become familiar with the FAR Part 77 surfaces and the importance of protecting the surfaces.
- NOTAMS - Intern will become familiar with how to issue NOTAMs using NOTAM Manager and will be able to identify a situation warranting a NOTAM.
- WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT - Intern will participate in wildlife mitigations, developing an understanding of the risk wildlife hazards create in an airport environment.
- VEHICLE/PEDESTRIAN OPERATIONS - Intern will learn best practices when operating in the movement areas including the use of the phonetic alphabet and proper radio communications.
- TERMINAL & LANDSIDE OPERATIONS - Complete daily terminal inspections to ensure cleanliness and functionality of all aspects of the terminal. Observing certain construction projects to ensure there are no obvious safety hazards to passengers in the vicinity of their working area. Inspect airport property outside of the AOA to ensure no maintenance attention is required.
- NON-MOVEMENT/MOVEMENT AREA TRAINING - Intern will ride along during drivers training in order to understand what is expected of employees operating in these areas.
SECURITY (1-2 Weeks)
- TSR 1542 - Intern will become familiar with TSR 1542 and how it applies to the airport. In addition to the requirements related to maintaining compliance.
- AIRPORT SECURITY PLAN (ASP) - Intern will be given the opportunity to review the ASP to assist in understanding how the airport maintains compliance.
- ACCESS CONTROL - Overview the access control system, doors, and alarms.
- AIRPORT BADGING - Become familiar with the processes and requirements of issuing airport IDs.
PUBLIC SAFETY (1-2 Weeks)
- TERMINAL RESPONSES - Intern will shadow Deputies while responding to door alarms and other simple calls.
- CUSTOMER SERVICE - Will assist officers with customer service issues as they arise.
- INVESTIGATION & REPORTING - Intern will learn how officers handle investigation and reporting.
AIRPORT RESCUE & FIREFIGHTING (1-2 Weeks)
- INSPECTIONS - Shadow Chief during fuel farm inspections, fuel truck inspections, fueling operations, etc.
- TRAINING - To the extent possible the intern will participate in any staff training during their internship.
- EMERGENCY RESPONSE - Participate in simulated aircraft emergency in the AOA.
- DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES - Intern will assist ARFF Personnel in daily operational duties such as ARFF truck inspections, and PPE familiarization.
Miscellaneous - The scope of the program can vary extensively due to several outside influences such as seasonal weather conditions, construction activity, special projects, etc.
