Katmai Air Summer Internship Program
Katmai Air: Summer Internship Program
Established in 1974, Katmai Air is the premier air transportation provider for Katmai National Park and the greater Bristol Bay region of Alaska. We are excited to offer students, enrolled in a Collegiate Aviation Program, the opportunity to see what professional flying and living in the state of Alaska is all about. Through our 7-day internship program you will sit it in on and participate in ground and flight training and checking events in our float planes (DHC-3T, DHC-2, C206) as well as our PC-12’s. If you are selected, you will also be provided the opportunity to spend time in King Salmon, where we base our float plane operation. After the 7 days are up, the intern will have a good baseline knowledge on 135 operations in Alaska and the variety of opportunities that are available to aspiring professional pilots. This internship is not paid, however all lodging, transportation, and food expenses (except alcohol) will be covered by Katmai Air. There is possibility for summer employment during non-school summer months working the dock, this includes pay with overtime, housing, meals, and a Cessna 206 Floatplane for use by appropriately rated pilots after work hours.
Internship Itinerary
Our internship will run during the end of May into the beginning of June. Exact dates will be known by the time applicants are selected for interview, plan for 7 days around the end of May/early June, travel dates to and from Anchorage will be the day before and after the internship. Throughout the week, the intern will attend our float plane ground school. The first day will be mostly in the classroom as we complete the required training for our operations. After the ground school is complete, the intern will be riding along on training events in our Cessna 206, DHC-3 Otters and DHC-2 Beavers. We have several PC-12 flights throughout the week as well, so the intern can see our wheel side of the operation.
During the internship we will be moving our float plane fleet from Lake Hood, in Anchorage, to their summer bases at Kulik Lodge and King Salmon. Once the intern is out in Bristol Bay, they will have every opportunity to ride along on revenue flights, work the dock, and experience the day to day work of being a pilot in Alaska. Most days throughout the internship will start at 8 am and be done at or around 5pm. We know that along with the work, the lifestyle in Alaska is a big draw for working here. We will provide the intern the time and ability to experience the lifestyle of living and working in Alaska.
