About Hayward Air Rally, Inc. - The Hayward Air Rally, Inc., is a not-for-profit California public benefit corporation with IRS 501(c)(3) status, which stages the annual Hayward Air Rally. Originally conceived by the City of Hayward's Mayor in 1964, the air rally's primary charter is to enhance general aviation safety by encouraging aircraft pilots to stay proficient in basic flight navigation and fuel management techniques.
The Hayward Air Rally Scholarship is intended to enhance and encourage a candidate's interest in an aviation career. An award up to $2500 may be used toward educational expenses associated with aviation curricula such as flight training, aeronautical degrees, A&P mechanic certification, air traffic controller certification, avionics training, airport management training, etc.
Multiple scholarship awards are possible. A winner's award will be paid in their name directly to their college, university, vocational/trade school, flight school, or other legitimate aviation-related entity. Final number of recipients and award amounts will be dependent on rally funds available at the closing of the scholarship deadline, April 22nd, 2024.
Applicants may attend aviation-related institutions anywhere in the USA, however, applicants must provide proof of a personal connection to Hayward, California, or the area within a 20 mile radius of Hayward Executive Airport (KHWD), CA. Forms of acceptable proof are a home address of residency, or high school diploma, from within this area.
A minimum GPA is not required to apply, however, evidence of GPA less than 2.8 could be disqualifying for our scholarship. In this case, applicant must use essay question #5 to explain extenuating circumstances, for example, work, class load, or other challenges. Describe any successful efforts or planned strategies to balance GPA with the rest of life.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
Be 18 years of age or older
Be pursuing an academic degree in a 2-year Associate’s, 4-year Bachelor’s, or other Vocational / Technical Program
Applicant must prove a current connection to Hayward, CA or the area within a 20 mile radius of KHWD, but may attend an aviation-related institution anywhere in the USA.
Applicant must demonstrate a serious interest in pursuing a career in aviation.
Applicant must have a GPA of 2.8 or greater, or answer indicated essay questions within application if GPA falls below 2.8.
Applicant must be pursuing one of the following degrees/certifications: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Science, Aircraft pilot licenses or ratings – e.g. Private, Commercial, Instructor, SEL, MEL, Rotorcraft, Aircraft Mechanic licenses, Avionics certification, Aircraft Dispatcher certification, Air Traffic Controller, Air Traffic Management, Airport Management, Aircraft Maintenance Operations or Management, Flight Operations or Management, Professional Flight.

Award Details
With generous pledges of support from the Hayward Airport and rally participants, the Hayward Air Rally is sponsoring a new scholarship to support candidates pursuing aviation related careers. In the second year of this program, we plan to make one or more awards of up to $2500 to qualifying applicants for use towards flight training or academic expenses associated with an aviation or aeronautical major.
The scholarship is open to Bay Area residents within 20 miles of Hayward, 18 years or older, who are actively pursuing an aviation related career.
We are taking applications via the Going Merry scholarship portal. The scholarship posting is available via this link to their site or the widget below. The application deadline is April 22, 2024. Selection of the winning candidates will be based on the evaluation of application materials and appropriate follow-up by Hayward Air Rally volunteers. The selection of the scholarship winner(s) is at the sole discretion of the Hayward Air Rally committee and will be made by May 13, 2024.
