Capital Region Airport Operations Officer

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Operations Officer is responsible for the operation of the Airport Operations Area or Airport Operations Center during his/her assigned shift.  Tasks included in this position include, but are not limited to, monitoring of airport security equipment, general dispatch duties, monitoring of airport airfield activities, conducting airfield inspections, and security patrols.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Communicates effectively and prepares written reports and records information using computer systems.
  2. Reads regulations and complex documents.
  3. Analyzes data from a variety of sources and makes decisions accordingly.
  4. Handles all departmental telephone and radio traffic.  Dispatches Public Safety personnel appropriately.
  5. Maintains the departmental daily log and other departmental records as required.
  6. Monitors the computerized access control system.  Acknowledges alarms, sends commands, and dispatches officers as needed.
  7. Inputs data for badging files, produces and issues badges, modifies computer files as needed.
  8. Maintains records of surfaces and areas within the Air Operations Area as required by FAR Part 139.
  9. Reports conditions to appropriate persons and agencies.
  10. Performs general clerical duties including the maintenance of departmental files and paperwork.
  11. Monitors any security or fire alarm equipment within the Airport Operations Center.
  12. Provides information and assistance to the general public and other agencies, engages in public relations functions.
  13. Attends training as directed by the Chief of Public Safety and Operations.
  14. Performs other duties as directed.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Associate degree or equivalent preferred.   College coursework in a related curriculum preferred.
  • Experience in airport operations at an air carrier airport may be considered equivalent to educational requirements.

Experience:

  • Some prior experience as an Airport Operations Officer or equivalent.
  • Computer experience with software programs used by the Airport Operations Center desirable.  Prior supervisory experience desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to prepare written reports and record information using computer systems.
  • Ability to read regulations and complex documents.
  • Ability to analyze data from a variety of sources and make decisions accordingly.
  • Ability and willingness to effectively deal with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to maintain effective communications with the public and other public safety agencies.
  • Ability to read and understand complex laws, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and develop new solutions.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve information from computers.
  • Ability to pass criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
  • Must be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Accordingly, work schedule will vary depending on department requirements.

  • Works in Operations Center and Air Operations Area.
  • Works in an area with radio, phone, and airport security equipment for prolonged periods.
  • Drives on an airfield during all weather conditions for prolonged periods.
  • Works outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Works in areas of loud noises.
