Job Summary

The Intern for Pitkin County will join an assigned department or division of Pitkin County for the purpose of gaining industry experience in a career path aligned with their chosen field of study at a post high school level of education. This internship must be conducted on-site. All work must be conducted within the State of Colorado.

The Airport Intern will join the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) team to complete a 9 month internship which covers all aspects of airport operations including: wildlife and wetlands management, snow and ice removal, USDA, FAA and TSA regulations, ARFF, landside and airside operations to include line management and badging. The intern will also complete an airport related project which will be assigned based on the operational needs of the Airport.

Job Responsibilities

  • Shadow Pitkin County employees for the purpose of gaining industry experience.
  • Complete designated assignments as determined by the school curriculum. 
  • Assist Pitkin County staff in assigned department or division with daily tasks as requested.
  • Participate in general office duties to include but not limited to data entry, scanning, filing and recording documents; conducting phone calls and interacting with the general public.
  • Participates in data collection via surveys and represents Pitkin County to the general public. 
  • Maintains reliable attendance record. 
  • Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

The Airport Intern must be receiving college credits,  currently enrolled in an accredited college or university studying Aviation Management or a related field, or a recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation date)  in order to qualify for this position. 

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate school program with major course work in a field related to the assigned department. 
  • Must be resident in Colorado for the duration of the internship.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Knowledge Of:
  • Safety policies, procedures, and practices for industry standards.
  • Customer service techniques
  • Basic knowledge of office record keeping procedures.
Skill In:
  •  Organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks.
  •  Microsoft Office Products and Google Suite to include word processing, presentations and spreadsheets.
  •  Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  •  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is usually performed in a standard office environment and may include some assignments which can be completed remotely. Some internships may require outdoor field work which will require the ability to climb, hike, ride a bicycle or drive a vehicle.
