Academic: Where can I get help with my studies and research?
There are a number of offices at WMU that support all graduate and undergraduate students. Sometimes it can be helpful to let the office you are contacting know that you are inquiring as a graduate student; they may be able to tailor services specifically to you. Your home department and academic college offer programs year-round.
Each academic discipline has its own journals, language, and opportunities for scholarship. Professional associations and connecting with your faculty advisor your program is often the best way to learn about opportunities for scholarship and research.
General Academic Resources
- WMU Graduate College Workshops and Events - A calendar of events and workshops focused on a variety of helpful topics. Graduate students can search for graduate focused workshops at Experience WMU when they log into their GoWMU account.
- Graduate Student Commons - A space in Waldo Library just for graduate students where study rooms, open space, printing, photocopying are available.
- Library Services for Graduate Students - Information about workshops, research tutorials, citation guides, research carrels, working with librarians, and textbook alternatives.
- Technology resources are abundant at WMU. Link through the Office of Information Technology or the Library services including mapping and GIS, Makerspace, Glass Studio, Virtual Reality Lab, the help desk, as well as information about computer labs, wireless, email, GoWMU and printing.
- Disability Services for Students - Advocates for students to be provided with the appropriate tools and academic accommodations or adjustments to make education accessible.
- Academic policies for graduate students are listed in the Graduate Catalog and the academic honesty definitions and FAQs can be found through the Office of Student Conduct.
- Academic Resource Center – Primarily offering online College Success Seminars as a develop new or refine current skills. Graduate students may set up an individual appointment with a staff member if they have specific concerns about academic or study skills.
Writing Resources
- Writing Center - WMU has a Writing Center that offers a free consultation service dedicated to helping individuals better understand, apply and develop various writing related skills through one-on-one, client and text specific workshops. Graduate students should indicate that they are a graduate student when contacting the Writing Center
- Graduate College - Offers workshops, and resources related to professional development and writing.
- WMU thesis and dissertation formatting guide available on our Dissertations and Theses page – Is available to students online in addition to semesterly workshops.
Research & Grant Resources
- Responsible Conduct of Research - A requirement for all graduate students, this is an online course completed through Elearning.
- WMU Library also offers help with research skills via the subject and course guides, research tutorials, and information literacy instructions
- Three-Minute Thesis Competition - Offered in Fall and Spring, provides an opportunity to students to present research projects in a fast-paced and engaging manner; cash prizes are awarded.
- Creative Activities Poster and Performance Day is held annually (typically in April) and promotes graduate student scholarship.
- Office of Research and Innovation offers workshops, webinars and resources for WMU students, faculty, and staff.
- Hilltop Review - An online peer-reviewed journal hosted at WMU.
- Evaluation Center - Offers the Evaluation Café a weekly series featuring guests who speak about a wide range of topics.
- Statistical Consulting Center - Offers fee-based consulting to doctoral students on a limited basis. Also works with faculty and staff on projects.

Global engagement academic opportunities
- Study Abroad - WMU offers several opportunities for graduate students to participate in educational programs in other countries.
- Fulbright U.S. Student Program - Offers fellowships for graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists from the United States to study, conduct research or to serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for one academic year.
