Hepatitis A vaccinations urged

November 3, 2017

In response to an outbreak of hepatitis A in southeast Michigan, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging healthcare providers throughout the state to promote hepatitis A vaccination. There are no confirmed or suspected cases of hepatitis A on the WMU campus. As a preventive measure, Dr. Lisa Marshall, Sindecuse Health Center director, recommends receiving a vaccination if you are in a risk group or wish to gain immunity. Highest-risk groups include:

  • Food handlers
  • Healthcare workers
  • Persons with a history of substance use
  • Persons currently homeless or in transient living
  • Men who have sex with men
  • Persons with underlying liver disease
  • Persons incarcerated in correctional facilities
  • Persons who are in close contact with any of the above risk groups

Vaccination will be available by appointment. Individuals may call the center at (269) 387-3287 or visit the Sindecuse web site to make an appointment.
